The Holy Ghost?

The Doxology we sing ends with, “Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.” But the Holy Spirit the Scriptures reveal is not a ghost, but a Person who is God, the 3rd member of the Trinity.

The Holy Spirit is a person.

1. Possesses attributes of personality
   1. Intellect(Rom. 8:27; 1 Cor. 2:10-11; Eph. 1:17)
      • NOTE: Holy Spirit has ability to teach(John 14:26; 1 Cor. 2:13)
   2. Emotions(Eph. 4:30)
   3. Will(Acts 16:6-12; 1 Cor. 12:11)
2. Performs actions of personality
   1. He teaches(John 14:26; 1 Cor. 2:13)
   2. He bears witness(John 15:26; Romans 8:16)
   3. He guides into all truth(John 16:13)
   4. He leads(Romans 8:14)
   5. He convicts/convinces(John 16:8)
   6. He forbids to preach(Acts 16:6-7)
3. He commands
   1. Philip(Acts 8:29)
   2. Paul & Barnabas to be set apart(Acts 13:2)
4. He intercedes for us(Rom. 8:26)
5. He searches all things(1 Cor. 2:10)
6. He comforts as He comes alongside(Comforter/Paraclete)

The Holy Spirit is God.

1. Possesses attributes of Deity
   1. Omniscient(John 14:26; 16;13; 1 Cor. 2:10-11)
   2. Omnipresent(Psalm 139:7)
   3. Omnipotent
      1. Power of Creation(Job 33:4)
      2. Power of Regeneration(John 3:5-8)
      3. Power of Incarnation(Luke 1:35)
   4. Eternal(Hebrews 9:14)
   5. Life(Rom. 8:2)
   6. Truth(John 14:16-17; 15:26; 16:13)
2. Performs actions of Deity
   1. Creation(Gen. 1:2)
   2. Incarnation(Matt. 1:20)
   3. Inspiration(2 Pet. 1:21; 2 Tim. 3:16 – “breathed out by God”(theopneustos))
   4. Regeneration(John 3:6; Titus 3:5)
   5. Intercession(Rom. 8:26)
   6. Sanctification(2 Thes. 2:13 )
   7. Conviction(John 16:8)

With all the Charismatic Chaos(would make a good title for a book) and all the Strange Fire(would make another good title for a book) that has invaded evangelicalism, it is no wonder there is so much confusion as to who the Holy Spirit is. To understand the third member of the Trinity, we must understand that He is a person and that He is God.
